Biblical figure of Eve is theme of works in Slifka Center exhibit

The Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale is hosting an exhibition by artist Deborah Rosenthal titled "Eve's Vocabulary." The exhibit includes 15 abstract paintings that develop the theme of the biblical figure Eve as the embodiment of nature's fecundity and the eternal feminine spirit, according to Rosenthal. The works will be on view at the Allan and Leah Rabinowitz Gallery of the Slifka Center through Thursday, Nov. 4. "I have come through motifs and conventions learned from their applications in Western art to painting pictures which arise from my Jewishness, not least of which is a connection to the narratives of the Bible," says the artist of her work. Rosenthal is a professor of art at Rider College in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Her paintings have appeared in such venues as the Bowery Gallery in Soho and the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Learning. The New York Times described her work as exhibiting "an infectious buoyancy of spirit." An opening reception for the exhibit -- which the artist will attend -- will take place at the Slifka Center on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 5:30-7 p.m. Both the reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, located at 80 Wall St., is home to Yale Hillel and Young Israel House at Yale. It serves Yale students, faculty and staff as well as members of the New Haven community by providing social, religious and cultural programming, including lectures, conferences, film festivals and arts events.
