The departments of pharmacology and psychiatry at the School of Medicine are inviting friends and colleagues of the late Dr. Robert Byck to join in a celebration of his life on Friday, Oct. 1.
Dr. Byck, professor of pharmacology and psychiatry, died on Aug. 9 in Boston following a stroke. He was 66 years old.
A medical school faculty member for 30 years, Dr. Byck devoted his career to studying both the psychological and pharmacological facets of the drug experience -- from demonstrating that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was the major component of marijuana, to quantifying the effects of cocaine and crack cocaine on humans.
Dr. Byck also played an instrumental role in identifying the relationship between monosodium glutamate (MSG) and the flush and headache of the "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome," and his testimony before Congress was instrumental in the elimination of MSG from baby foods.
The memorial service in Dr. Byck's honor will be held at 5 p.m. in the Historical Library in the Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St. A reception will follow in the Beaumont Room.
