Among the three recipients of this year's Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association's Committee on Scientific Awards is Allan R. Wagner, the James Rowland Angell Professor of Psychology.
Wagner was recognized specifically for his "outstanding contributions" to the study of conditioning and behavior theory, which include being "a major innovator of powerful concepts that have revolutionized theories of habituation, classical conditioning and instrumental con-ditioning."
Collaboration between Wagner and colleague Robert Rescorla led, in 1972, to publication of a learning rule that bears their names, the Rescorla-Wagner equation. Wagner's most recent work has led to advances in research in the areas of drug and alcohol addiction, and Alzheimer's disease.
