Joseph Soares, assistant professor of sociology, will discuss and sign copies of his new book, "The Decline of Privilege," Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 4:30 p.m. at the Yale Bookstore, 77 Broadway. The book focuses on Oxford University which, Soares contends, has had to transform itself since World War II from "a private liberal-arts club with aristocratic pretensions" into "a state university heavily committed to the sciences with a middle-class orientation." The event is free and open to the public.

Jeanette R. Ickovics, associate professor of epidemiology and public health, received the 1999 "Emerging Leader for Women in Psychology" award from the Committee on Women in Psychology of the American Psychological Association. The award, announced at the association's annual meeting in Boston in August, cites among Ickovics' achievements her "unsurpassed accomplishments and contributions to research, interventions and public policy on women's health -- both overall and specifically addressing HIV/AIDS among women" and her "continued commitment to using the results of research to improve public policy regarding the prevention and treatment of women's health problems."

Yale University has been recognized for its community service initiatives. The editors of "The Best College for You," a publication of Time magazine and The Princeton Review, has selected Yale as one of 11 colleges and universities nation-wide receiving "honorable mention" for College of the Year for their social outreach programs. The University was cited for its $12.5 million investment in a $108 million retail and residential project in downtown New Haven, and for providing $4 million for a major shopping-district renovation.
