Conference to explore diverse topics in women's health
Renowned experts from around the country will convene in October to present innovative women's health research as part of the second Yale Conference on Women's Health & Fitness.
The conference will run Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 2123 at the Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale, 155 Temple St. The coordinators of the event include Yale University Health Services and the Yale-New Haven Health System.
This year's conference brings together health practitioners from many disciplines that have a strong interest in advancing women's health research and prevention strategies. Conference topics include issues that are of special concern to women and their families such as breast cancer, menopause, eating disorders, alternative medical treatments, exercise and financial well-being.
"We are proud to be a part of what will be a valuable learning experience for all attendees," says Dr. Paul Genecin, director of Yale University Health Services and associate clinical professor of internal medicine. "We believe that this unique event signals Yale's strong commitment to women's health not only at the University, but also in the Greater New Haven community."
The conference is a broad collaboration between the Yale Health Plan, the Schools of Medicine and Nursing, the Department of Athletics, the Yale-New Haven Health System and participants from institutions all over the country. In addition to keynote speakers Dr. Marianne Legato of the Partnership for Women's Health at Columbia University and Christine Wells of Arizona State University, the featured speakers will include faculty from Yale's Schools of Medicine and Nursing.
"Our focus is not just on disease treatment, but on prevention and wellness," says Judith Madeux, conference co-chair and associate director of clinical services at Yale University Health Services. "We hope to attract attendees from a wide variety of interests and backgrounds, including healthcare professionals, women in the community, students and people who interact with women in the areas of health and fitness -- including nurses, social workers, nutritionists, and specialists in physical fitness."
Plans for next year's conference include expanding the curriculum to include health policy issues affecting women's health. The conference coordinators would like to make the conference an annual New Haven event and include even more institutions in the coming years.
Corporate sponsors for the conference include Phoenix Home Life Mutual Insurance Company, Procter & Gamble Health Care, Women's Education Life Learning at Yale-New Hospital and Lilly.
Registration fees vary depending on affiliation, but student rates are $59. The registration fee covers all sessions, continental breakfast and luncheon on Friday and Saturday, as well as refreshments during the breaks. Registrants will also receive weekend passes to the Payne Whitney Gymnasium on Tower Parkway.
Participants are invited to begin each day of the conference with a walk around Yale campus. These morning exercise programs meet at the Omni Hotel lobby Friday, 6:30-7:30 a.m. and Saturday, 6:30-7:30 a.m.
The registration deadline is Monday, Oct. 4. For more information or to register, contact Yale University Conference Services at 432-0465 or log on to the Yale Conference on Women's Health and Fitness website: www.info.med.yale.edu/ynhh/well.
