Former V.P. of European Commission named visiting scholar at Yale SOM
Sir Leon Brittan, who has just relinquished his post as vice president of the European Commission, has been appointed a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Yale and will be based at the Yale School of Management (Yale SOM).
At Yale, one of Brittan's major assignments will be to help Yale enhance its focus on European economics and politics and trans-Atlantic relations.
The appointment will bring him several times a year to New Haven, where he will interact closely with students, and also lead Yale-wide faculty seminars that delve into a variety of topics including trade, finance and institutional issues. Professors from the fields of law, business, economics, political science and history will attend these seminars.
"We are delighted that Sir Leon has agreed to join us," says Yale SOM Dean Jeffrey E. Garten. "His affiliation with Yale SOM is part of our intensifying global focus, which links scholars and 'real-world' officials in a seamless way, and which recognizes the connections between business, economics, and politics. Sir Leon brings great depth to all these areas."
Brittan became vice-president of the European Commission in 1995 and was a member since 1989. From 1989 to 1992 he was responsible for competition policy and financial institutions. From 1993 to 1999 he was responsible for external economic affairs and trade policy. From 1995 to 1999 he was responsible for trade policy and for political and economic relations with North America, Australasia, China, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea.
After studying at Cambridge, Brittan was a Henry Fellow at Yale in 1961-62. He was called to the Bar in 1962 and became a queen's counsel in 1978. He was a member of Parliament from 1974 to 1988 and served in Margaret Thatcher's Cabinet as, successively, chief secretary to the treasury, home secretary and secretary of state for trade and industry.
