There will be a gathering-within-a-gathering during the conference on "Goethe and Modern Culture," being held Oct. 8-10 at the Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St. (See related story.)
Members of the Connecticut Chapter of the Humboldt Association of America at Yale University will gather along with other conference participants to hear Manfred Osten, secretary general of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, present the talk "Accelerated Time: A Few Remarks on the Modernity of Goethe" at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9.
The Connecticut Chapter of the Humboldt Association of America at Yale University supports the work of the Humboldt Foundation, which promotes scholarly cooperation between Germany and the rest of the world.
The Humboldt Foundation sponsors research in the humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences. It especially encourages applications for postdoctoral work by young scholars. Since 1998, the foundation has sponsored 20,000 scholars from 125 countries. Many professors at Yale and other colleges and universities in Connecticut have benefited from Humboldt awards.
The author of "The Grumble Gesellschaft: Young Americans Experience Germany and the Germans," Osten is an expert on Goethe and the age of German Romanticism. He was a member of the German diplomatic corps for 20 years, and is also a well-known
lyric poet.
