Solicitor General Waxman to speak at Law Reunion
A lecture by Seth P. Waxman '77 J.D., solicitor general of the United States, is among the highlights of the Law School Alumni Weekend taking place Friday-Sunday, Oct. 8-10.
Waxman will discuss "The Physics of Persuasion: Arguing the New Deal" at 4 p.m. in Rm. 127 of the Law School, 127 Wall St. The event is free and open to the public. Waxman will be introduced by Drew S. Days III '66 LL.B., the Alfred M. Rankin Professor of Law and former solicitor general of the United States.
Waxman is the 41st solicitor general of the United States. He was nominated by President Clinton for the post, which he assumed in November of 1997. He previously served in a number of positions in the Department of Justice, including acting solicitor general, acting deputy attorney general, principal deputy solicitor general and associate deputy attorney general. Prior to joining the Department of Justice in 1994, Waxman was an attorney in the Washington, D.C. firm of Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin, where he specialized in complex criminal, civil and appellate litigation. He has received substantial recognition for his pro bono work, including the American Bar Association's Pro Bono Publico award and the Anti-Defamation League's Benjamin J. Cardozo Certificate of Merit.
A native of Hartford, Connecticut, Waxman earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard College in 1973 and spent the next year in Kenya as a Rockefeller Fellow. While at the Law School, he served as managing editor of the Yale Law Journal.
Several other noted individuals will visit the campus during the reunion weekend, including Yale trustee David Gergen '63 B.A., the Public Service Professor at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and editor-at-large of U.S. News & World Report. Gergen will give the keynote address at the event.
On Saturday, the Yale Law School Association will present its Awards of Merit to Marian Wright Edelman '63 LL.B., president of the Children's Defense Fund, who will also preach at Battell Chapel during her stay on campus (see Visiting on Campus, page X), and Alexander D. Forger '50 J.D., special counsel at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP.
Alumni from 12 Law School classes will return to campus this year for their reunions. They will attend talks by a number of faculty members who have recently authored books of public interest, and will tour recently renovated Law School buildings, including the Lillian Goldman Law Library, the Alumni Reading Room and classrooms and seminars. In addition, they will take part in a variety of informal activities and receptions.
