Divinity School fellowships honor individuals' work for social justice
Three individuals will be honored for their work promoting social justice on Monday, Oct. 18, when the Divinity School formally names them as its 1999-2000 Coffin-Forsberg Fellows.
The installation ceremony will take place during the school's regular 9:30 a.m. chapel service in Marquand Chapel, Sterling Divinity Quadrangle, 409 Prospect St. The service is free and open to the public.
The Coffin-Forsberg Fellows program was created in 1995 by the Divinity School General Faculty to increase the school's commitment to urban and social ministry and to honor those who were "called to work for social justice in the parish and the world." Named for William Sloane Coffin, former Yale chaplain, and Joan Bates Forsberg, former associate dean for students at the Divinity School, these non-monetary fellowships invite the recipients to be involved in the community life of the Divinity School.
The 1999-2000 Coffin-Forsberg Fellows are:
Anita Bradshaw, who originated the fellowship program during her tenure as the Divinity School's director of the Supervised Ministries program from 1993 to 1998. Bradshaw is being honored for continuing the peace and justice ministry of Coffin and Forsberg by bringing together individuals who work for urban and social justice within the church and the Greater New Haven community, while upholding the mission of the Divinity School by making connections with the community it serves.
Lillian Daniel, senior minister of Church of the Redeemer, is recognized for her leadership in Elm City Congregations Organized, which promotes grassroots economic and social justice organizing in New Haven. A graduate of the Divinity School, Daniel has mentored five student pastors through the school's program in Supervised Ministries and has served on the New Haven Association (United Church of Christ) Committee on the Ministry.
Ellen Gabrielle, executive director of AIDS Project New Haven. In addition to Gabrielle's work with that organization, her social ministry has included various positions with Columbus House, Habitat for Humanity, Columbus 500 and Women's Health Services. Gabrielle is a long-time member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in New Haven.
