Engineering program honors John Malone and Robert Grober
After giving his Sheffield Lecture on Oct. 7, John Malone '63 was presented the Sheffield Medal by D. Allan Bromley, dean of Yale engineering and the Sterling Professor of the Sciences
The award recognizes the career contributions of the Yale alumnus, who is currently chair of Liberty Media Corporation and who served for more than two decades as the chief executive officer of Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI). (See related story, page 1.)
The Sheffield Medal is presented to leaders and innovators in business, industry and government who visit the campus as Sheffield Fellows. Fellows are
Also honored at the Sheffield Fellowship lecture was Robert D. Grober, the Barton Weller Associate Professor of Applied Physics and associate professor of physics, who received the Sheffield Distinguished Teaching Award. Grober was selected last year for the award but was in Europe at the time on a leave of absence, so the formal award presentation was made at the Sheffield Lecture.
Grober's research is concentrated in the area of optical imaging, specifically near-field optical microscopy. Bromley noted that students gave the Yale faculty member stellar reviews. The Dean quoted one student from Grober's differential equations course, who commented, "I would rather have my teeth filed than take this course again, but I wouldn't have missed it for anything."
