This fall, the Yale-China Association is hosting an exhibit of works by a Chinese artist who is devoted to creating the perfect expression of tranquility.
The one-man show, titled "Tranquility and Balance: The Ink and Watercolor Paintings of He Guogang," will run Sept. 11-Dec. 15. There will be an opening reception for the exhibit 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Yale-China Association, 442 Temple St.
The classically trained artist uses symmetrical brushstrokes, natural imagery and subtle washes of color to produce works designed to inspire quiet contemplation and reflection in those who view them. His subjects are familiar themes in Chinese art -- drunken poets, gentle animals, innocent young women and close-up views of foliage -- captured in idealized and sometimes playful poses.
The Shanghai-born artist has exhibited paintings on canvas and porcelain in several international art shows and been recognized in "Who's Who of Contemporary Chinese Fine Artists." He currently lives and paints in New York City.
"Tranquility and Balance" will be open to the public 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Admission is free.
