Renovated gallery to feature architects' creations

When the School of Architecture opens its first fall exhibit on Wednesday, Sept. 6, there will be more on display than just the items in the show.

Also making its public debut on that day will be the newly renovated Second Floor Gallery in the Art & Architecture Building, 180 York St.

The renovation of the gallery is the first phase of a more ambitious project led by Dean Robert A.M. Stern to restore the A&A Building completely. Designed by Paul Rudolph and completed in 1963, the building was ravaged by a fire of unknown cause in June of 1969. The restoration project seeks to reverse many of the alterations that followed the fire. As part of this summer's improvement project, for example, non-original partitions were removed from the gallery in order to restore it to Rudolph's dynamic open floor plan.

The school's Fall 2000 Exhibition Series includes works by world-renowned architects, emerging architectural talent and architects-in-training.

The first exhibit, "Cesar Pelli: Building Designs 1965-2000," will be on display Sept. 6-Nov. 3. The show, which will encompass the entire second-floor exhibition space, will be Pelli's first at Yale since he served as the school's dean from 1977 to 1984.

The installation will offer an insight into the design process of one of America's most distinguished architects. In conjunction with this exhibit, Pelli will present an informal gallery talk during the Sept. 6 opening reception, which will be held 5:30-7 p.m. The public is invited.

Beginning Nov. 13, the Second Floor Gallery will be the site of three new exhibits by famous and emerging architects.

The School of Architecture Gallery is open to the public free of charge 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m on Saturdays. For general inquiries regarding this schedule, related events or directions to the school, call (203) 432-2288.
