Kemel Dawkins, associate vice president for facilities, is serving as acting vice president for finance and administration while a search is underway for a successor to Joseph P. Mullinix.
Mullinix, who was vice president for finance and administration since 1993, has joined the University of California system as senior vice president for business and finance.
Since coming to Yale in 1995, Dawkins has directed major construction and renovation projects on campus, ranging from the modernization of Yale's physical plant to extensive multi-year renovations of the residential colleges, Sterling Memorial Library, the Law School and the Payne Whitney Gymnasium. In addition, he has helped oversee construction of the Irving S. Gilmore Library, the Residential Swing Space and the new School of Art. Current building projects with which he is actively involved include the new state-of-the-art Environmental Sciences Facility on Science Hill.
"Kemel has done an outstanding job in managing well over $1 billion of construction projects," said President Richard C. Levin in announcing Dawkins' appointment to the acting post. "The officers have great confidence that he will work successfully with the other outstanding members of Joe Mullinix's leadership team until a new vice president is appointed."
A graduate of Princeton, Dawkins came to Yale with more than 15 years of construction and management experience. He previously served as associate vice president of the facilities department at Stanford University, and was director of the department of construction and project management at the University of Pennsylvania. He has also been the chief financial officer at the Philadelphia-based Kem-Her Construction Company.
This year, Dawkins received an Ivy Award for his working relationship with the New Haven Preservation Trust.
