The University of Pretoria in South Africa conferred an honorary Doctor of Divinity on Abraham J. Malherbe, the Buckingham Professor Emeritus of New Testament Criticism and Interpretation at the Divinity School, on Sept. 8.
Malherbe was cited for "the important contribution he made in linking the material of the New Testament with the social ecology of ancient societies" and for drawing "attention to the relevance of certain Hellenistic material for understanding Biblical documents." The nature of Malherbe's work is demonstrated in his commentary on St. Paul's letters to the Thessalonians in Doubleday's Anchor Bible series.
