Scientists from Yale, China enter new partnership
Yale established a joint center for research and training in plant biology with China's Peking University that will actively foster collaborative research among scientists at the two universities and will train the next generation of international leaders in the field.
Research at The Peking-Yale Joint Center for Plant Molecular Genetics and Agribiotechnology will initially focus on the field of basic biology in model plant systems and on the application of this basic research to crop improvement -- an area of great interest in both China and the United States.
The center also plans to facilitate student and faculty exchanges between Peking University and Yale, providing for extended laboratory and study visits in Beijing and in New Haven by researchers from the two institutions and their students. Under the leadership of faculty from both universities and with counsel from an internationally-drawn scientific advisory board, the center will serve as a model of global scientific partnerships in the field of plant genomics and modern agribiotechnology.
The first center director will be Xing-Wang Deng, associate professor in Yale's Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, where most of the New Haven activities of the center will take place. However, the center is open to all members of the Yale community with an interest in plant biology.
"The Yale scientific community is proud to join in this innovative partnership with Peking University," says Deng. "We look forward to joining Peking to build a productive research community that will make scientific strides of value to China, to the United States and to the world at large."
A formal inauguration ceremony will take place when Yale President Richard C. Levin visits Peking, currently scheduled for spring 2001, but organizational activities and research operations are already underway.
