Dr. Michael Berman, clinical professor of obstetrics/gynecology, will read from and sign copies of his book "Parenthood Lost" on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 1:30 p.m. at the Yale Bookstore, 77 Broadway. The event is free and open to the public.
David Mayhew, Sterling Professor of Political Science, will be one of the featured speakers of the "Seminar on the United States Presidency" at the Institute of United States Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London. Mayhew will discuss "Congressional 'Oppositions' to the Presidency: Two Centuries of Perspective" on Feb. 15, 2001. For more information, send email to iuss@sas.ac.uk.
Dr. Michele Barry, professor of medicine and public health and director of the Office of International Health, was elected president of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. The society is the principal organization in the United States representing scientists, clinicians and others with interests in the control and prevention of tropical diseases based on research and education.
Tomas Venclova, professor of Slavic languages and literatures, received an honorary doctorate from Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, on Sept. 28 as part of the university's 600th anniversary celebration. The Resolution of the Senate of Jagiellonian University honored Venclova, a leading Lithuanian émigré poet, for his voluminous body of work -- poetry, scholarship and journalism -- and for the contribution that his uncompromising personal stance made to the spiritual emancipation of eastern and central Europe from the legacy of totalitarianism.
The Sterling Memorial Library received honorable mention in the preservation category of the American Institute of Architects Connecticut's 28th annual 2000 Design Awards program. Renovations on the library were designed by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott of Boston, Massachusetts.
Yale University Press appointed Patricia Fidler to the position of executive editor for art and architecture titles and manager of the Art Book Workshop. Fidler came to Yale from Princeton University Press where she was an acquisitions editor for art and architecture titles and manager of an art book production group. In her new role, Fidler will continue to acquire major museum catalogues and important trade and scholarly titles.
Violinist Erick Friedman, professor adjunct of violin at the School of Music, was among the prominent musicians and scholars invited by UNESCO/International Music Council to participate in the international conference and festival "The Promotion of Local Music Heritage in the Age of Globalization." Joining Friedman were two Yale alumni, cellist Cecylia Barczyk MM '79 of Towson University and social scientist Charles K. Borowsky STM '76, president of the International Institute for Regional Studies. The event was held in Amman, Jordan, Sept. 17-21, and over 3,000 people were in attendance, including the Jordanian royal family. Friedman also received the Ignace J. Paderewski Award for Distinguished Contributions to Society and Culture at the Polish Embassy in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 4. The award ceremony was part of the International Tribute to Paderewski, organized by the International Friends of Music Association and the International Committee for Honoring I.J. Paderewski's Contributions to Music and Democracy.
The State Department of Environmental Protection presented the GreenCircle 2000 award to the Peabody Museum of Natural History on Nov. 8 in a ceremony held in Torrington. The museum was recognized for "New Haven Quinnipiac River Cleanup Day 2000," a project coordinated by Luke Barton, museum events coordinator, and for the "Peabody Fellows Biodiversity Education Program," a four-year project that has been instrumental in bringing science education to New Haven's public schools. To date, 34 teachers have passed through the program, impacting more than 1,800 students from 12 New Haven elementary and middle schools. The GreenCircle 2000 awards program was first announced three years ago by Governor John Rowland to recognize positive contributions promoting natural resource conservation and environmental awareness by civic organizations, individuals and businesses in Connecticut.
