Those hoping to bring a twinkle to the eyes of loved ones with special gifts this holiday season may come across perfect finds in the University's museum shops, which are stocked bountifully with gift items -- from the rare or one-of-a-kind to the whimsical or witty.
The following is a look at just a few of the items that can be found at campus shops.
Wool hats, sweaters and scarves from Peru and Native American jewelry are among the gift items from around the world that can be found in the museum shop at the Peabody Museum of Natural History, 170 Whitney Ave.
At this shop, handcrafted items and jewelry made by indigenous people abound, as do items related to the natural world -- such as rocks and minerals, mounted insects (tarantulas and scorpions, for example), and dinosaurs in all forms. Holiday ornaments, calendars, children's toys, pottery, T-shirts, books, incense burners and holders, candles, and pots and dishes are also among the shop's offerings from every corner of the globe. New this year at the shop are toys and gift items specifically for infants.
The museum store is open 10 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Monday-Sunday. It will be closed Dec. 24 and 25.
Gifts for both the artist -- young or old -- and the art aficionado are a specialty of the Yale University Art Gallery's museum shop, which has been expanded this year to accommodate more items.
The shop offers twice as many books about art and artists in the newly expanded store. Other offerings include frames and one-of-a-kind frameable cards; jewelry created by noted artists, designers and architects; keepsake books; holiday cards; note cards; calendars; games for adults and children related to visual design; and art puzzles.
Located at 1111 Chapel St., the shop is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 1-6 p.m. Sunday. It is closed Dec. 24 and 25. Shoppers can also order online at the shop's website (shared with a consortium of art museums) at museumshop.com/yug.
Items featuring the artistic or cultural life of the British Isles -- as well as gift selections created by artisans there -- fill every nook and cranny of the museum shop at the Yale Center for British Art, 1080 Chapel St. Like the other shops, this store also offers specially crafted jewelry, as well as books, holiday cards, calendars and note cards. Pottery is also a popular item in the shop, as are children's toys and playthings centered on a British theme, such as the familiar figures of Winnie the Pooh, Paddington Bear and Alice in Wonderland.
The shop is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. It is closed on Mondays and on Dec. 24 and 25. | ||||||
