Eric Johnson

Record-setting Bulldog garners regional awards

In the 1999 game against Harvard, Yale football player Eric Johnson brought victory to Yale by making the game-winning touchdown catch with just 29 seconds remaining in the game.

His triumphant move was one of the "Plays of the Week" on the television sports station ESPN.

In this year's 34-24 win over Harvard, Johnson snared 13 passes for 113 yards and a pair of touchdowns, one of which made the ESPN "Plays of the Week." And his accomplishments do not end there.

On Dec. 6, Johnson was honored by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston with the Swede Nelson Award for the most academically talented football player in New England. The following day, he received the Harry Agannis Award for New England's top senior player at the New England Football Writers Annual Captains and Awards Banquets. Both events took place at Lantana's Restaurant in Randolph, Massachusetts.

A wide receiver and punter for the Bulldogs, Johnson broke 11 receiving records and one punting mark during his four-letter career. He broke the Yale career receiving yardage record in the Oct. 21 game against the University of Pennsylvania, during which, on Yale's first play from scrimmage, he ran an out-and-up pattern and received a 57-yard pass to set up one of his two touchdown catches in the win over the Quakers.

The senior finished his Bulldogs football career with a record-breaking 181 catches, 2,144 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns. In 1999, he broke Yale's single-season records in receiving (67 catches) and game receiving yards (244, in the game against Harvard). His 21 catches in the Harvard game, including the game-winning catch, were also an Ivy record. Johnson also set a Yale record in 1999 with a 41.0 punting average and was second-team All-Ivy as both a receiver and punter.

A native of Needham, Massachusetts, Johnson is majoring in American studies and sociology and has a 3.64 grade-point-average. He earned first-team GTE Academic All-America status in 1999 and has twice attained Academic All-Ivy honors. His other honors this year include first-team All-Ivy as a wide receiver, honorable mention All-Ivy as a punter, first-team All New England and distinction as the New Haven Gridiron Club's Player of the Year.
