Yale Opera presents epic of love, intrigue

The Yale Opera program will present "The Coronation of Poppea," Claudio Monteverdi's musical dramatization of the epic struggle between fortune, virtue and love, on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26 and 27.

The production of the 1643 opera will take place both nights at 8 p.m. in Morse Recital Hall of Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St.

"The Coronation of Poppea" chronicles the amorous misadventures of the Imperial Roman court of Nero as the emperor ruthlessly plots to place his mistress, Poppea, on the throne, leading to political intrigue and moral abandonment.

Guest director Ned Canty and Christina Stanescu, a lecturer in the School of Music's opera program, will lead the production. Canty has mounted productions at New York City Opera, Glimmerglass Opera and Wolftrap, among others. Doris Yarick-Cross is the artistic director of Yale Opera.

Tickets are $10 ($5 for students) and are available by credit card by calling (203) 432-4158. Tickets can also be purchased Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the School of Music box office, 435 College St. The Sprague Hall box office will open one hour before the event.
