Mexican cabaret artist Astrid Hadad and her band Los Tarzanes will give two performances at the Yale Repertory Theatre this month as part of its Special Events Series.
Her performances will take place at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26 and 27 at the Rep, corner of Chapel and York streets.
Hadad is a Mexican Mayan-Lebanese from the Yucatan state of Quintana Roo. A self-defined "Cabarrera," or cabaret rowdy, she has performed in Latin America and Europe for more than a decade. She is a mainstay of Mexico City's long-running El Habito, where old-fashioned cabaret singing and performance art intersect.
Known for her outrageous costumes, Hadad sings about love, politics, shopping and sacrilege in her shows, and her band contributes rancheras, corridos and boleros to her often-serious revelations about neo-liberalism, immigration and women's liberation. The Dallas Morning News describes Hadad's art as "wildly energetic" and "a whirlwind of satire, mocking everything it touches musically and politically."
Hadad, whose performances fuse Folkloric Mexicano, opera, rock and blues, has said of her shows: "I speak about universal things, things that are important to everyone. I don't have a particular style. I am looking for pleasure."
Hadad will spend six days prior to the performance at the Yale Rep to fine-tune the English segments of her bilingual show.
Tickets for "Astrid Hadad Y Los Tarzanes" are $24 for the general public, $18 for Yale Rep subscribers and $15 for students and seniors. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Yale Rep box office, 1120 Chapel St., or over the phone by calling (203) 432-1234. Box office hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
