For the first time in 17 years, Yale Hockey returns to the New Haven Coliseum when the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame fly in from South Bend on Saturday, Jan. 27.
For Notre Dame's first visit to the Elm City, the Bulldogs and Irish face off at 4 p.m. on Saturday and again on Sunday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m. at Ingalls Rink.
Notre Dame, 3-11-3 overall and 1-7-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey League this year, has sent 10 players to the National Hockey League during its 41-year history. The Irish have wins over Miami, Northeastern and Wayne State.
Two members of the Fighting Irish, Dan Carlson (LW) and Sam Cornelius (D), went to Edina High in Minnesota, the same high school as Yale captain Ben Stafford. Notre Dame's Evan Nielsen (D) attended the Taft School in Connecticut, which also produced Yale's Denis Nam (F).
Yale and Notre Dame men's hockey teams have squared off twice in places other than the two campuses, with the Elis taking both games. The first was a 5-0 decision on Jan. 8, 1927, in New York City -- Yale's 200th all-time victory. The last meeting was in Hartford as part of the 1985 Phoenix Classic. The Elis took the tournament game 10-5 on Jan. 4.
Yale head coach Tim Taylor, in his 23rd season with the Bulldogs, is five victories shy of the school coaching win record held by Murray Murdock, the oldest living NHL player. Dave Poulin, who spent 12 years in the NHL and was an all-star, is Notre Dame's fifth-year mentor.
Tickets for the Coliseum game are $10.75-$20.75; children aged 14 and under are $5.75 or $8.75. The Bulldogs are also offering a special "Schley Room on the Road" package featuring pre- and post-game receptions; reservations for the package must be made by Jan. 19.
Tickets can be purchased at the Coliseum box office; through the Yale ticket office at (203) 432-1400; or through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com or (203) 624-0033. For groups of 20 or more, call (203) 503-6011.
