Ian Shapiro

Political scientist assumes
William Kenan Professorship

Ian Shapiro, the new William R. Kenan Professor of Political Science, is an expert on distributive politics whose most recent work explores how American democracy can be more responsive to the needs of the country's poor citizens.

Chair of the Department of Political Science, Shapiro was chosen in May as one of 12 new Carnegie Scholars. The new two-year awards provide research grants of up to $100,000 in support of individual scholarship. Shapiro is using his award for his project on "Democracy and Distribution in the United States," exploring why the American political system does not redistribute more income and wealth to the poor.

A critic of rational choice theory (which holds that people behave rationally and purposefully in pursuing certain goals), Shapiro is the coauthor, with Yale colleague Donald Green, of "Pathologies of Rational Choice Theory: A Critique of Applications in Political Science." His other books include "Democratic Justice," "Democracy's Place," "Political Criticism" and "The Evolution of Rights in Liberal Theory." He is coeditor of the anthology "Power, Inequality and Democratic Politics."

Born in South Africa, Shapiro earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy and politics from Bristol University in England. He earned M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in political science from Yale College and a J.D. from the Yale Law School. He joined the Yale faculty in 1984 and became a full professor in 1992. He was associate director of the South Africa Research program at Yale and served on a committee charged with designing the major in ethics, politics and economics. He has also been director of the Program in Ethics, Politics and Economics.

Elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in May, Shapiro has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and New York University Law School, among other organizations.
