Memorial service will honor former Dwight Hall leader

There will be a ceremony on Friday, Sept. 22, celebrating the life of the Reverend Luther Tucker, a former general secretary and longtime board member of Dwight Hall, a campus center devoted to promoting public service and social justice.

Rev. Tucker died on July 21 at his summer home in Old Lyme, Connecticut. He was 91 years old. The service in his honor will be held at 11 a.m. in the Dwight Hall chapel, 63 High St. A reception will follow in the Luther Tucker Memorial Library.

A pioneer of interfaith cooperation, Rev. Tucker was a member of the Yale College Class of 1931 and held a divinity degree from the Episcopal Theological School. During his early years with the church, he worked with students overseas. He was jailed in 1939 in Japan for distributing information on the casualties caused by that country's invasion of China.

Rev. Tucker became secretary of Dwight Hall in 1941. He left Yale in 1949 to become rector of the newly founded Indian Hill Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, a post he held until his retirement in 1973. He continued to serve on the Dwight Hall board of directors until his death.

A resident of Cincinnati, Rev. Tucker is survived by his wife, Josephine Pullman Tucker; three daughters, Elizabeth Sanders of Washington, D.C., Marcia Boogaard of Potomac, Maryland, and Naomi A. Stochr of Cincinnati; a son, Luther Tucker Jr. of Easton, Maryland; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions in his name may be sent to: Dwight Hall at Yale, P.O. Box 209008, New Haven, CT 06520.
