Graduate School greets new scholars

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences held its Matriculation Day for new students on Aug. 30.

At the ceremony in Sprague Hall, President Richard C. Levin and Dean Susan Hockfield welcomed the new studentss to Yale, and Nobel laureate Sidney Altman, the Sterling Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, shared memories of his own graduate school days.

Afterward, Levin hosted a reception at his residence, where students signed their names into the official Graduate School register, continuing a tradition instituted when the school was new, over 150 years ago. Following a box lunch in the courtyard of the Hall of Graduate Studies, there was an Information Fair to introduce newcomers to the organizations and services of Yale and New Haven.

This year, there are 536 new students in the Graduate School, chosen from a pool of 5,710 applicants. Males slightly outnumber females, 290 to 246. The newcomers joined 1,661 continuing students.

One hundred ninety international students entered the Graduate School this year from 53 different countries. The largest group, 49, comes from the People's Republic of China, followed by 16 from Germany, 15 from Canada, and 10 from India.
