Roberta Frank


Medieval literature expert joins
faculty as Smith Professor

Roberta Frank, a medieval literature scholar, has joined the Yale faculty as the Douglas Tracy Smith Professor of English.

A long-time faculty member at the University of Toronto, Frank writes and lectures extensively on medieval European literature. She is noted particularly for her studies of ancient and medieval Scandinavian poetry and literature.

In her numerous articles, Frank explores topics ranging from Skaldic verse to the dating and interpretation of "Beowulf" to Germanic legend in Old English literature. She is the author of "Old Norse Court Poetry: The Dróttkvætt Stanza" and edited "The Politics of Medieval Texts." She has been the general editor of the Toronto Old English Series since 1976 and of Publications of the Dictionary of Old English since 1985. She co-edited "Computers and Old English Concordances" and "A Plan for the Dictionary of Old English."

Frank earned her B.A. from New York University and a M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. She joined the faculty at the University of Toronto in 1968 and was conferred tenure four years later while still an assistant professor. She became a full professor in 1978. Frank held numerous administrative posts there, including director of graduate studies in the Department of English, and associate director and later director of the Centre for Medieval Studies. She was a visiting professor at the University of Sydney, Australia, and a distinguished guest at the Center for Medieval Studies in Sydney in July, 1999.

Frank is editor of Anglo-Saxon England and an editorial associate for The Southern African Journal of Medieval and Renaissance Studies. She is on the advisory board of the Oxford Dictionary of the Middle Ages.

Her honors include the Elliott Prize from the Medieval Academy of America. She is a fellow of the Medieval Academy of America and the Royal Society of Canada.
