New political science faculty member to hold Stout chair
John E. Roemer, a noted political economist who has taught for more than two decades at the University of California, Davis (UC-Davis), has joined the Yale faculty as the Elizabeth S. & A. Varick Stout Professor of Political Science.
Roemer is a specialist in the areas of distributive justice and socialism. He has written 11 books, several of which have been translated into other languages. These include "A General Theory of Exploitation and Class," "Value, Exploitation and Class" and "A Future for Socialism."
His other books include "Analytical Foundations of Marxian Economic Theory," "Free to Lose: An Introduction to Marxist Economic Philosophy," "Egalitarian Perspectives: Essays in Philosophical Economics," "Theories of Distributive Justice," and his most recent, "Equality of Opportunity."
Roemer is also the coauthor of "Sustainable Democracy" and "Equal Shares" and has edited or coedited six books. In hundreds of articles and lectures, he has explored such subjects as international economics, distributive justice and political philosophy, pure game and social choice theory, public ownership and market socialism, and political economics.
Roemer earned his undergraduate degree in mathematics from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley. He began his career as a high school math teacher in San Francisco. He joined the faculty at UC-Davis in 1974 and became a full professor there in 1981. He has been director of the Program on Economy, Justice & Society at UC-Davis since 1988. He has been a visiting professor at Yale, Harvard and the University of California, Los Angeles.
An associate editor of the Journal of Ethics and Economic Design, Roemer serves on the editorial boards of several journals. His professional affiliations include a fellowship in the Economietric Society.
