The future of cities will be the focus of symposium
The School of Architecture will hold a cross-disciplinary symposium on the future of cities, titled "Next Cities: Paradoxes of Post-Millennial Urbanism," on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6 and 7, in Hastings Hall of the A&A Building, 180 York St.
Organizers of "The Next City" symposium suggest that the line separating city and landscape has blurred, and that cities of the future will increasingly integrate nature with buildings. "The re-invention of the city as a hybrid form, in-between, and therefore sharing an unprecedented variety of cultures and forms, both radically new and thoroughly familiar, is a critical part of the agenda for architecture and the design professions in the new century," says Alan Plattus, one of the directors of the Urban Design Workshop, who organized the symposium with his codirector, Michael Haverland, and with Architecture Dean Robert A.M. Stern.
Anthony Williams, mayor of Washington, D.C. and a Yale College alumnus, will be the keynote speaker and the year's first Eero Saarinen Lecturer. His talk, "Recasting the Shadows: The District in the 21st Century," will take place Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Distinguished architects and faculty members from several universities, including Yale, will make presentations. Saturday's program will feature sessions on "Urban Roles," looking at the city's entertainment, residential and environmental functions; "Urban Contexts," both global and virtual ("e-city"); and "Urban Regions," focusing on the "sprawling city." The symposium will conclude with the inaugural Roth-Symonds Lecture, "Urbanism and the New Capitalism," presented by Richard Sennett, chair of the Cities Programme of the London School of Economics. Yale President Richard C. Levin will deliver closing remarks.
The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. To reserve a space, call (203) 432-2889 or email architecture.pr@yale.edu prior to Friday, Sept. 29.
