Panel to look at Elm City entrepreneurship
New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. will headline a panel on the state of entrepreneurship and economic development in New Haven on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Rm. 101 of Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St.
The panel, which is free and open to the public, is hosted by the Yale Entrepreneurial Society (YES), a University-wide organization dedicated to promoting entrepreneurship at Yale and in New Haven.
"This is an exciting period in New Haven's development," says David Pozen, president of YES, who will moderate the panel. "Everyone wants New Haven to reestablish its position as a dynamic economic center and an attractive place to live.
"Will New Haven benefit from the biotech explosion? Will New Haven start-ups stay in the city? Can New Haven attract the private investment necessary to support these companies and move capital projects forward? These are just a few of the big questions that will need to be resolved," continues Pozen. "This panel will examine the issues from a variety of perspectives -- City Hall, Yale and local entrepreneurs."
In addition to the Mayor, panelists will include: Henry Fernandez, director of the city's Office of Economic Development; Bruce Alexander, vice president and director of Yale's Office of New Haven and State Affairs; Richard Schultz, chief executive officer of Metaserver, a leading developer of e-business infrastructure software; Jonathan Rothberg, founder and chief executive officer of Curagen, a publicly traded biotechnology company, who was named Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year in 1998; Michael Stern, founder and managing partner of Aquarium Ventures, a zero-stage incubator; and Jonathan Leibovitz, founder of YellowPen, a web-based knowledge management system. Leibovitz is also the winner of last year's Y50k Entrepreneurship Competition, the annual business plan competition hosted by YES.
The event will open with a talk by DeStefano looking at the latest economic and political developments affecting New Haven. These include Yale's recent commitment to an investment of over $1 billion in the medicine, science and engineering departments; the city's Empowerment Zone program which recently awarded $25 million in funding to SYNNAP, a start-up Internet data center; and plans for a $25 million mall at Long Wharf. The panel will then discuss the current state of entrepreneurship in New Haven as well as its potential for future growth.
A reception, which is also open to the public, will precede the panel at 6:45 p.m.
