![]() Jared French's work "Crew" is among the 24 paintings on view in "Private Realisms." A master's tea and a reception will mark the opening of the exhibition on Sept. 29. Wadsworth Atheneum curator Eugene R. Gaddis will be the featured guest at the tea. |
Subtitled "American Paintings 1934-1949," the display features 24 works from the DCMoore Gallery and the Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, as well as several private collections. It will be on view Sept. 28-Nov. 17.
The Realist movement in art began in the years before World War II as "an antidote to abstraction," writes guest curator Daphne Anderson Deeds in the catalogue accompanying the exhibit.
"As a philosophical term, realism is the claim that material objects exist externally to the mind or sensory experience," notes Deeds. "Thus realism opposes idealism, which holds that no external realities exist apart from our consciousness of them. ... And yet, what is realism but the unique vantage point of the individual artist -- that acquaintance we thought we new? The realist is but a magician, skillfully extracting elements of the known world to create a private realism."
The artists whose works are featured in the display are John Atherton, Audrey Buller, Paul Cadmus, Jared French, Margaret French, James Guy, Hananiah Harari, Channing Hare, Henry Koerner, Walter Murch, Bernard Perlin, Charles Rain, Priscilla Roberts and Pavel Tchelitchew.
A master's tea and a reception will mark the opening of the exhibit on Thursday, Sept. 28. Eugene R. Gaddis, the William G. DeLana Archivist and curator of the Austin House at Wadsworth Atheneum, will be the featured guest at the tea, which will take place at 4 p.m. His topic will be "Chick Austin and the Return to Realism." Austin, a friend and collector of many of the artists featured in the JE show, was director of the Wadsworth Atheneum for many years. A reception will follow the talk 5-7 p.m. Both events will be held in the JE master's house, 70 High St.
"Private Realisms: American Paintings 1934-1949" is open to the public most Thursdays 4-6 p.m. or by appointment by calling (203) 432-0356.
