Childhood memories take artistic form in "Jewish Holidays and Ceremonies," the newest exhibit at the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale.
The paintings by the late Samuel B. Rose -- whose three sons and nine grandchildren attended Yale -- are on public display for the first time.
There will be an opening reception for the exhibit 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24, in the center's Allan and Leah Rabinowitz Gallery. The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.
Rose (1889-1964) was born to immigrant parents on New York's Lower East Side. During World War I, Rose served in the U.S. Army as a combat infantryman in France, where his lifelong habit of drawing and sketching attracted attention. Subsequently, several of his cartoons were published in the military newspaper Trench and Camp. After the Armistice, he enrolled in a French art school, and upon his return to New York, he enrolled in the Art Students League where he studied painting with Robert Henri and John Sloan.
The oil paintings in the center's exhibit were completed in the 1950s and feature images of the colorful Jewish holidays of his childhood.
Although Rose gave up his art studies to enter the business world, he continued to paint, specializing in landscapes, still lifes and religious subjects. He was also an active correspondent, and a posthumously published volume of his letters and illustrations is in the collection of Yale's Sterling Memorial Library.
"Jewish Holidays and Ceremonies" will continue through Oct. 24. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday-Sunday. For information, call (203) 432-1134.
