Individuals interested in natural history are invited to an open house and orientation for prospective volunteers at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the Peabody Museum of Natural History, 170 Whitney Ave.
The open house will introduce potential volunteers to the museum's diverse collections and show them how they can match their interests to Peabody's needs.
For example, volunteers are needed to:
* conduct "Highlights Tours" of the Peabody on weekends;
* help at special events such as the Paleo-Knowledge Bowl competition, the week-long Dinosaur Days and the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration;
* serve as docents teaching the more than 35,000 schoolchildren who visit the museum throughout the academic year (college degree and six-week training program required);
* act as teacher's aides and technical resources for the museum's mobile BioAction Lab, part of a new biodiversity education outreach initiative with the New Haven Public Schools; and
* become Senior Series assistants, teaching programs based on the museum's collections and providing hands-on craft activities for participants from New Haven senior centers.
All volunteers receive training. Anyone who cannot attend the open house but would like to volunteer should contact Sally Lanzi, volunteer coordinator, at (203) 432-3731.
The Peabody Museum of Natural History is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children aged 3-15 and senior citizens aged 65 and over. For directions or other information, call (203) 432-5050 or visit the website at www.peabody.yale.edu.
