The David Everett Chantler Award goes to the senior who best exemplifies the qualities of courage, strength of character and high moral purpose that were characteristic of the life of Mr. Chantler, Class of 1910. This year's winner is Ashley Lucas of Morse College. The award was presented by Steven B. Smith, professor of political science and master of Branford College, who is chair of the Council of Masters' Committee on Awards. His remarks follow. Ashley Lucas We honor you today for balancing a wonderful career here at Yale while dealing with a family crisis of tragic proportion back in your home state of Texas. You have been editor of the Morse Literary Magazine. A talented writer and lover of theater, you have produced and directed a one-woman production of Sophie Treadwell's "Machinal." You have been president of the Yale Russian Chorus and a member of Nueva Tropa Teatral, a student group dedicated to bringing more Spanish and Latin American theater to Yale. Tomorrow you graduate with a double major in English and American studies. For your courage on behalf of family and University, we are happy to award you the David Everett Chantler Award.
