International Festival of Arts and Ideas: Tours

The Yale Visitor Center at 149 Elm St. will be the starting point for special tours at 1:30 p.m. daily during the International Festival of Arts and Ideas.

Most of the tours are walking tours exploring the downtown area and Yale campus; a limited number of special bus tours will travel further afield.

The following is a list of tours being offered. For further information, call the Yale Visitor Center at (203) 432-2302 or the festival headquarters at 1-800-ARTIDEA; or visit the festival website at www.artidea.org.

June 14: The Yale University Art Gallery, with a focus on the exhibit "Art for Yale: Defining Moments," about the growth of the gallery's collection.

June 15: Kids' Architectural Treasure Hunt, a self-guided tour designed to acquaint youngsters aged 7-12 with Yale's and New Haven's architecture. Ongoing all day.

June 16: The Peabody Museum of Natural History, with a focus on such popular exhibits as the dinosaurs in the Great Hall and the dioramas. Transportation by bus.

June 16, 17, 22-24 and 30: Walking tour of the Yale Campus, led by Yale students.

June 17: A tour of New Haven and Yale's contemporary architectural treasures, conducted by The Alliance for Architecture.

June 18, 21 and 28: "New Haven First," highlighting the Elm City's most exciting innovations in its 360-year history.

June 19: The New Haven Colony Historical Society, with a focus on the exhibits "The 1901 Project" and "Young Architects of New Haven."

June 19 & 27: The historic Grove Street Cemetery, led by a representative of the Friends of the Grove Street Cemetery.

June 20: The Freedom Trail, a driving and walking tour detailing the history of the struggle for the African American freedom movement in New Haven and its effect on U.S. civil rights.

June 21: Tour of the architecture of Louis I. Kahn, led by Alexander Purves, who will discuss the design of the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art.

June 23: Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven, a look at homes in Newhallville and the Hill that have been transformed by the organization.

June 23: Hillhouse Avenue, an exploration of the historic byway led by the New Haven Preservation Trust. A reception will follow at the New Haven Colony Historical Society.

June 24: Wooster Square, a tour of the residential neighborhood's 19th-century architecture and its history. Vans will transport participants.

June 25: Payne Whitney Gymnasium, exploring one of the largest indoor athletic facilities in the world.

June 26: Tour of the Center Church on the Green and the Crypt, a National Historic Landmark, established in the New Haven Colony in 1638.

June 28: The Shubert Performing Arts Center, led by Ruth Feldman, featuring the historic theater's backstage and dressing room areas as well as the famous "graffiti walls." Reservations requested.

June 29: Yale's Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory, which houses the largest nuclear accelerator of its type in the world. A bus will take visitors to and from the lab.

June 30: New Haven's community gardens and greenspace, a tour that will begin with an overview and discussion of the city's gardens and greenspace projects over a light lunch at the Yale Visitor Center at 12:20 p.m.
