William H. McKim Prize

Yale senior Meredith Bryarly was honored with the William H. McKim Prize during Senior Class Day exercises on May 20.

The McKim Prize, established by the friends and classmates of William McKim, is for a senior majoring in political science, economics or a related field who has shown marked improvement in his or her academic standing in upper-class years and who has made a significant contribution in one or more activities outside the classroom.

Steven B. Smith, professor of political science, master of Branford College and chair of the Council of Masters Committee on Awards, presented the award to Bryarly. A member of the Yale women's swim team, she also received Yale's top female athlete prize, the Nellie Pratt Elliot Award, at the Class Day ceremony.

The prize citation follows.

"This year the McKim Prize goes to Meredith Bryarly of Branford College. You entered Yale from Conroe, Texas, where you had been recruited for the swim team. Yale-posed academic challenges, combined with the rigors of the swim team, made this scholar-athlete especially deserving of this prize. Tomorrow you graduate with a B.A. in architecture and as the holder of Yale records in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle. You were the sole Yale women's swimmer to go to the nationals this year by virtue of having won the 2001 Ivy League Championship. Both your accomplishments in the pool and on dry land have been nothing short of extraordinary. We are delighted to honor you this year with the William H. McKim Prize."
