Festival to feature everything
from opera to aerial dancers

The celebration of global and local talent and treasures, to be held June 14-30, will include: aerial dancers; a puppet's-eye peek into the life of Mozart; a poetry marathon; enormous inflated architectural sculptures; opera on the Green; and a look back at the May Day riots of 1970. And that's in addition to the numerous and varied theatrical productions, musical performances, lectures series and mini-festivals comprising this year's event.

As in the past, Yale is a sponsor of the event, and many festival activities will be held on the Yale campus. (See story.) These include activities being hosted by the Yale Center for British Art in conjunction with its exhibits "The Line of Beauty: British Watercolors and Drawings of the 18th Century" and "Snowdon." (See story.) The Yale Visitor Center is also sponsoring a variety of special tours during the festival. (See story.)

In addition to the events on campus, highlights of the International Festival of Arts and Ideas will include:

* The Metropolitan Opera's performance of Puccini's "Tosca" on the New Haven Green.

* "Translations," a love story by Brian Friel, performed by Abbey Theatre, Ireland's National Theatre Company, at Long Wharf Theatre.

* The third annual "Short & Neat One-Act Play Festival" sponsored by the New England Academy of Theatre.

* A production of Cole Porter's musical "Kiss Me, Kate" at the Shubert Performing Arts Center.

* "Inwords/Outwords: poetry of place," a six-hour, six-venue poetry festival exploring the poetic connection between inner lives and outer worlds. Among the featured participants will be J.D. McClatchy, editor of The Yale Review.

* Concerts by the funk-rock band Cameo and blues artist Robert Cray, among other artists of international renown, on the World Stage on the New Haven Green -- as well as lunchtime and evening concerts by Connecticut groups on the nearby Fleet Stage.

* "May Day 1970," which will bring former Black Panthers, including cofounder Bobby Seale, back to New Haven for discussions with community members about the historic trial of group members and the surrounding protests.

* Large and colorful tunnels, mazes and domes created by Architects of Air.

* "Heart of the Matter," two afternoons of imaginative arts and science workshops for children and families. Participating organizations will include the Yale School of Nursing, which will offer its "Have Bones, Will Travel" interactive display about the human body; the Yale University Art Gallery, which will hold an art-making workshop; and the Yale Children's Theater, which will invite participants to create improvisational skits.

* Celebrations of New Haven's neighborhoods, community gardens and arts community.

* "The Great Kinetic-cut Sculpture Race 2001," featuring people-powered creations by local citizens.
