British Art Center hosting talks, trips, music during International Festival
The following activities are being presented by the Yale Center for British Art during the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, June 14-30.
The activities are being sponsored in conjunction with the center's exhibits "The Line of Beauty: 18th-Century British Drawings and Watercolors" and "Snowdon: A Retrospective"
Unless otherwise indicated, these events will be held at the British Art Center, 1080 Chapel St., and are open to the public free of charge.
* Steven Parrissien, assistant director of studies at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art in London, will lecture on "From Stucco to Steam: The Transformation of 18th-Century Britain." June 18, 5:15 p.m.
* Murray Biggs, adjunct associate professor of English and theater studies, will direct "The Glimmering Landscape and the Damned Distracted Town: Readings in Town and Country from Alexander Pope to Jane Austen and Beyond," a selection of 18th-century poetry and prose on the theme of the conflict between town and country. June 19, 5:15 p.m.
* Ann Bermingham, professor of the history of art and architecture at the University of California at Santa Barbara, will look at the important social role of amateur artists in the 1700s in the lecture "Learning to Draw in the 18th-Century." June 20, 5:15 p.m.
Bermingham will also offer a seminar in which she will examine 18th-century works on paper in the British Art Center's Department of Prints and Drawings. Attendance is limited; pre-registration is required. Call (203) 432-2858 to register. June 21, 2:30 p.m.
* The Four Nations Ensemble, under the direction of Andrew Appel, will present "The London of Handel and Haydn: A Concert of 18th-Century Music." June 21, 5:15 p.m.
* " A Visit to an 18-Century Collection in an 18th-Century House." This rare opportunity to tour the Lewis Walpole Library in Farmington with the library director and staff, will include a tea and a chance to walk the grounds. Transportation is provided, but space is limited; reservations are required. Call (203) 432-2850. There is a $5 fee for adults; $3 for students. June 22, 1:30 p.m.
* "18th-Century Britain on Film." This series will feature such classics as "Tom Jones" and "Barry Lyndon." June 18-23, 2 p.m. Watch future issues of the Yale Bulletin & Calendar for listings.
* A conversation between photograppher Lord Snowdon and Charles Saumarez-Smith, director of the National Portrait Gallery in London. June 15, 5 p.m. (To be held in the Yale University Art Gallery's McNeil Lecture Hall.)
* "Snowdon: London POP." Artist Caleb Hammon will present "Performance Piece: London POP," a multi-media collage of imagery, sound and live action looking at London's fashion, literature and cinema. June 26 and 28, 4 p.m.
* "Snowdon: Britain and the Sixties on Film." This series features London films of the 1960s, including "A Hard Day's Night," "Blow-Up" and "Georgy Girl." June 25-30, 2 p.m. Watch the Yale Bulletin & Calendar for listings.
