Jazz trumpeter will perform and teach

Award-winning jazz trumpeter Clark Terry, a veteran of the Count Basie, Duke Ellington and "The Tonight Show" bands, will perform and teach on the Yale campus during a two-day visit Oct. 6 and 7.

On Friday at 8 p.m. Terry will perform with his quintet in a concert in Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St. Tickets are $25, $21 and $16 ($8 for students). The concert is being presented by the Duke Ellington Fellowship Program at the School of Music. Patron tickets will benefit Young Audiences of Connecticut and are available by calling (203) 230-8101. For further information, call (203) 432-4157 or visit the School of Music website at www.yale.edu/schmus.

On Saturday at 10 a.m., Terry, who has been called "America's #1 Jazz Educator," will give a master class for several young jazz bands from the local area in Morse Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Terry first gained fame in the 1940s with stints in the bands of Charlie Barnet, Charlie Ventura and Eddie Vinson. In 1948, he performed with Count Basie. Three years later, the trumpeter was asked to join Duke Ellington's orchestra, with which he peformed for eight years as a featured soloist.

Terry was an international star when he joined the musical staff of NBC, becoming the first African-American musician on the NBC payroll. He became a television star as one of the spotlighted players in "The Tonight Show Band." When "The Tonight Show" moved to Los Angeles, the highly sought-after Terry chose to remain in New York to continue performing as a jazz artist and studio musician.

An adviser to the International Association of Jazz Educators, Terry is the author of "Let's Talk Trumpet: From Legit to Jazz," "Interpretation of Jazz Language" and "Clark Terry's System of Circular Breathing for Woodwind and Brass Instruments."
