Music series kicks off with famed Chinese pianist

Fou Ts'ong, who has been hailed by Time magazine as "the greatest Chinese musician today," will launch the Horowitz Piano Series at Yale on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

Ts'ong will perform a program of works by Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin at 8 p.m. in Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St. He will also present a free master class the next day, Oct. 4, at 4 p.m. in Morse Recital Hall.

The Horowitz Piano Series at Yale features recitals by distinguished Yale faculty pianists and by renowned guest artists. The series is dedicated to the famed pianist Vladimir Horowitz, whose musical archive resides at Yale.

Ts'ong, who was born in Shanghai, went to Poland in the 1950s and was the 1955 prizewinner of the Chopin Competition, where he also won the Mazurka prize. A renowned interpreter of Chopin, he studied under Zbigniew Drzewicki and performed extensively in eastern Europe. In 1959 he arrived in London and made his debut under the baton of Carl Maria Guilini in the Festival Hall. He has since performed around the world.

Other performers in the Horowitz Piano series are all members of the Yale faculty. They are Claude Frank (Nov. 13), Boris Berman (Feb. 13) and Peter Frankl (March 29). Subscriptions for the four-concert series is $30. Single tickets are $8, $5 for students. For further information, call (203) 432-4157 or visit the School of Music website at www.yale.edu/schmus. For credit card orders or to obtain a series brochure, call (203) 432-4158.
