Mary T. Reynolds, expert on James Joyce and
former resident fellow of Berkeley College, dies

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, for Mary T. Reynolds, a scholar of James Joyce who had taught a Yale seminar about the Irish author and was a resident fellow of Berkeley College in the 1980s.

Ms. Reynolds, who was 87, died on Aug. 25 at her home in Washington, D.C. The service in her memory will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Battell Chapel, corner of Elm and College streets. It will be followed by a short reception.

Ms. Reynolds wrote a number of books about James Joyce, including the highly praised "Joyce and Dante: The Shaping Imagination," in which she traced the influence of Dante's poetry on Joyce's writing. Her other books include "Joyce and Nora," "Joyce and D'Annunzio," "Mr. Bloom and the Lost Vermeer" and "James Joyce: New Century Views."

She was a trustee of the International James Joyce Foundation and an editor of both the James Joyce Studies Annual and the James Joyce Quarterly.

The Mary Reynolds Memorial Fund has been established at Yale to benefit undergraduate members of Berkeley College.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Ms. Reynolds earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a doctorate in political science from Columbia University. She had taught political science at several colleges.

She is survived by her husband, Lloyd G. Reynolds; two daughters, Anne R. Skinner of Williamstown, Massachusetts, and Priscilla R. Roosevelt of Washington, D.C.; a son, Bruce L. Reynolds of Ithaca, New York; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Mary Reynolds Memorial Fund, Berkeley College Master's Office, 205 Elm St., New Haven, CT 06511; or to the James Foundation, c/o Professor Morris Beja, Department of English, Ohio State University, 164 West 17th Ave., Columbus, OH 43210.
