Berkeley Divinity School to laud four theologians at its annual gathering
A lecture on the future of theological education by the Right Reverend Victoria Matthews, the first woman ordained a bishop in the Church of Canada and a Yale trustee, is among the highlights of the Berkeley Divinity School's annual convocation on Wednesday, Oct. 11.
Also during the event -- which coincides with the annual fall convocation of the Yale Divinity School (see story) -- several prominent figures in the Episcopal Church and American religious life will receive honorary degrees.
Matthews will deliver the Cheney Lecture at 1:30 p.m. in Marquand Chapel of the Divinity School, 409 Prospect St.
Berkeley Divinity School Dean R. William Franklin and the school's board of trustees will present honorary degrees during a service of Evensong at 5:30 p.m. The Reverend Marilyn McCord Adams, the Pitkin Professor of Theology at Yale, will preach at the service. Honorary degrees will be awarded to:
Alan F. Blanchard '61, who oversees more than $3 billion in assets as head of the Church Pension Fund, which is widely regarded as one of the most successful and well-managed non-profit pension funds in the United States;
The Reverend Peter J. Gomes, the Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church at Harvard University, who is considered one of America's most effective preachers and is author of the best-selling volumes "The Good Book: Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart" and "Sermons: Biblical Wisdom for Daily Living";
Lucy Collins Nazro, head of St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Austin, Texas, and past president of the board of directors of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, who has overseen a dramatic expansion of her school to include middle and upper levels and a 74-acre addition to the campus; and
The Right Reverend Andrew D. Smith, Episcopal bishop of Connecticut, who formerly served at several Connecticut congregations, including St. Mary's in Manchester and St. Michael's in Naugatuck.
The Cheney Lecture, Evensong and a reception following Evensong are free and open to the public.
