Some of Christopher Columbus's other "discoveries" -- the islands of the Caribbean -- will be the focus of events at the Peabody Museum of Natural History on Monday, Oct. 9.
Visitors to the museum on Columbus Day this year will learn about the history, art and archaeology of the indigenous people of the Caribbean from some of America's foremost experts in Caribbean archaeology. The program is a joint venture with the New Haven Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America in honor of Connecticut Archaeology Week. The event is free with museum admission.
Some highlights follow:
Hands-on Archaeology Touch Table. 1-4 p.m. Visitors will be able to see and touch Caribbean archaeological artifacts from the museum's collections, and learn what these objects have to say about the daily lives and world view of the indigenous people of this area prior to the arrival of Columbus.
The Salt River Site, St. Croix, at the Time of Encounter. 3 p.m. Birgit Faber Morse, curatorial affiliate in anthropology at the museum, will talk about the discovery of an ancient ball court at the Salt River archaeological site on St. Croix, and the place of ball games in Native society.
The Prehistory of the Tainos. 3:30 p.m. Irving Rouse, Curator Emeritus in Anthropology at the museum, will trace the migration of the Taino people through the Caribbean and discuss the significance of the Hacienda Grande archaeological site in Loiza, Puerto Rico.
Amerindian Subsistence in the Caribbean. 4 p.m. James Petersen, assistant professor at the University of Vermont, will discuss the daily lives of prehistoric Caribbean peoples, their subsistence strategies and methods for survival.
The Peabody Museum of Natural History is located at 170 Whitney Ave. in New Haven. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 (adults) and $3 (children 3-15) and senior citizens (65+). Parking is available in the Peabody visitor parking lot located at the south end of Yale lot #22 (accessible from Whitney Avenue, one block north of the Museum).
