Howard Hughes Medical Institute funds biomedical sciences at Yale for 14th year
For the 14th consecutive year, the University has received funds from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to support graduate education in the biomedical sciences.
This year's payment amounts to $749,000, and will be used to provide tuition and stipend support for students in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) program throughout Yale.
HHMI is a medical research organization with headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland. It regularly makes such payments to Yale and other academic institutions to help maintain the health and excellence of graduate programs at universities where its laboratories are based.
HHMI investigators are employees of the institute and also hold faculty appointments at their host institutions. Yale has one of the largest groups of HHMI investigators at any university. It includes Professors Peter Cresswell, Pietro De Camilli, Jennifer Doudna, Susan Ferro-Novick, Richard Flavell, Sankar Ghosh, Arthur Horwich, Charles Janeway, Richard Lifton, Ruslan Medzhitov, Shirleen Roeder, David Schatz, Gerald Shulman, Joan Steitz, Thomas Steitz, Sandra Wolin and Tian Xu. The late Paul Sigler was also a member of the HHMI.
In addition to its support of graduate education, HHMI has once again provided funds to the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library at Yale. This year's payment of $221,000 will contribute to the operating budget of the library, with a special emphasis on the acquisition of new electronic books, journals, computer-assisted instructional programs and new document delivery methods.
