Men's Cross Country (1-0, 1-0 Ivy)

This Week: Oct. 13 at New England Championships (Boston, MA)

The Bulldogs beat Harvard for the second straight year. For the win, Yale received the Main Memorial Trophy, given in honor of Ensign Malcolm Gardner Main, captain of the 1941 Yale cross country team who was killed in action the following year in the Battle of the Solomon Islands.

Yale had the second- and third-place finishers in the race. Senior Rob Doyle (Chicago, IL) placed second with a time of 25:05, while junior Alexis Surovov (Shelton, CT) was third in 25:16.


Women's Cross Country (2-0, 2-0 Ivy)

Last Week: Oct. 6 -- Yale 18, Princeton 43; Yale 15, Harvard 47

This Week: Oct. 13 at New England Championships (Boston, MA)

Yale was presented the Cheever Memorial Trophy for its triangular victory. The trophy is given in memory of Olivia Thorndike Cheever (Radcliffe '43)

The Bulldogs had the top two finishers and seven of the first eight places in winning the team competition for the second straight year. Sophomore Kate O'Neill (Milton, MA) was the individual winner, finishing with a time of 17:31. It was her second title of the season. She also won the Fordham Invitational on Sept. 16. Kate's twin sister, Laura O'Neill (Milton, MA), was second in 17:36.


Field Hockey (0-10, 0-3 Ivy)

Last Week: Oct. 4 -- Providence 2, Yale 0

Oct. 7-- Dartmouth 4, Yale 2

This Week: Oct. 11 vs. Columbia, 3:30 p.m., Central Ave. Field

Oct. 14 at Harvard, noon

Sophomore Suzanne Anthony (Oklahoma City, OK) had a goal and an assist against Dartmouth. It was her second multi-point game of the season, and she leads the team in scoring with nine points (four goals, one assist). Suzanne's sister, Christine Anthony (Oklahoma City, OK), also scored against the Big Green.


Football (3-1, 1-1 Ivy)

Last Week: Oct. 7 -- Yale 24, Dartmouth 14

This Week: Oct. 14 at Fordham, 1 p.m.

Freshman Barton Simmons (Nashville, TN) was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week. Against Dartmouth he had a team-high 13 tackles, five pass break-ups and one interception.

Senior Rashad Bartholomew (Palos Verdes, CA) rushed for 188 yards against Dartmouth, including a 79-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. He now has 2,510 yards in his career, which is third all-time at Yale. He needs only 67 yards to pass Rich Diana '82 to move into second place. Dick Jauron '73, currently the head coach of the Chicago Bears, is the school record holder with 2,947 career yards.


Men's Golf (0-0, 0-0 Ivy)

Last Week: Oct. 3-4 -- 10th at Adams Cup (904)

Next: Nov. 6-7 at Desert Willow Invitational (Palm Springs, CA.)

Junior Chris Eckerle (Indianapolis, IN) was Yale's medalist at the Adams Cup. He finished in a tie for 20th with a three-round score of 221.


Women's Golf (0-0, 0-0 Ivy)

Last Week: Oct. 6-7 -- 3rd at Rutgers Invitational (642)

This Week: Oct. 14-15 at ECAC Championships

The Bulldogs have now finished in the top five in all four tournaments they have entered this fall.

Junior Annie Scholz (Galena, IL) finished third at the Rutgers Invitational. She had a two-round score of 158. Junior Sarah Seo (Lima, OH) tied for fourth with a 159, and freshman Katie Hatsushi (Danville, CA) tied for fifth (160).


Men's Soccer (5-5-0, 1-1-0 Ivy)

Last Week: Oct. 4 -- Yale 2, Quinnipiac 1

Oct. 8 -- Dartmouth 1, Yale 0 ot

This Week: Oct. 10 vs. Fairfield, 7 p.m., Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium

Oct. 14 at Harvard, noon

Senior Matt Schmidt (Milwaukee, WI) scored the game-winning goal against Quinnipiac on a penalty kick in the 99th minute. The Bulldogs were awarded the penalty kick when freshman Justin Burton (Somerset, NJ) was taken down in the box. It was the second time this season Schmidt has scored the game-winning goal in overtime on a direct kick. He also did it against Bradley on Sept. 15.

The Bulldogs are ranked seventh in New England in the latest NSCAA poll. Fairfield, Tuesday's opponent, is ranked second in New England and has been nationally ranked for most of the season. The Stags tied eighth-ranked Virginia 2-2 on Oct. 6.

Four of Yale's 10 games have been decided in overtime.


Women's Soccer (6-4-1, 1-2-0 Ivy)

This Week: Oct. 11 vs. UConn, 7 p.m., Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium

Oct. 14 at Harvard, 2:30 p.m.

Sophomore Chandra King (Mission Viejo, CA) scored Yale's goal against Dartmouth. She leads the Ivy League in overall scoring with 19 points (seven goals, five assists). Freshman Katherine Sims (Milton, MA) is second in the league in scoring with 15 points (seven goals, one assist).


Men's Tennis (2-1, 0-0 Ivy)

Last Week: ECAC Championships - 9th

Oct. 6 -- Penn State 4, Yale 3

Oct. 7 -- Yale 7, Marist 0

Oct. 8 -- Yale 5, Navy 2

Next: Oct. 20-22 at Dartmouth Invitational

Senior Greg Royce (Rye, NY) was a straight sets winner at No.1 singles in Yale's victories over Marist and Navy.

Junior Candace Green (Fort Washington, MD) had double-doubles in each of Yale's two matches. Against Columbia she had 10 kills and 17 digs, and against Cornell she had 14 kills and 10 digs. Junior Vanessa Herald (Pasadena, CA) also had a pair of double-doubles, recording 10 kills and 11 digs against Cornell and 14 kills and 10 digs against Columbia. Yale saw its eight-match winning streak come to an end with the loss to Cornell.
