NHSO concert will salute Yale Tercentennial
School of Music Dean and pianist Robert Blocker will be the guest artist in the New Haven Symphony Orchestra's (NHSO) first concert of its new season, which is being presented as a salute to Yale's Tercentennial.
The gala evening on Thursday, Oct. 19, which will also feature the performance of a piece by School of Music alumnus Michael Daugherty, '82 Mus.A.M., '87 Mus.A.D., recognizes the longtime partnership between the NHSO and Yale. The orchestra has been performing in the University's Woolsey Hall for over 65 years.
The evening's program includes Beethoven's Symphony No. 7; Saint-Saëns' Piano Concerto No. 2 (with Blocker as guest soloist); and Daugherty's 1998 composition "Route 66," which the composer has described as "a musical reflection on America, as seen through my rear view mirror."
"We are delighted to open our exciting new season with a tribute to our friends and partners at Yale on the occasion of their Tercentenary," says Jung-Ho Pak, music director of the NHSO. "We are also fortunate to have the wonderful talents of Yale's own Robert Blocker as our guest soloist. This program will start our new season off beautifully with its unique mixture of sound and texture."
Blocker, now in his second term as dean of the School of Music, maintains an international career as a concert pianist and has garnered critical acclaim around the world. He is also one of the nation's leading spokespersons on the arts and their relation to the business community.
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets. Tickets range from $15 to $48, and can be purchased by calling 1-800-292-NHSO or through the NHSO website at www.newhavensymphony.com.
