Peter Beinart

New Republic editor to visit
alma mater as Poynter Fellow

Peter Beinart, a Yale alumnus and the editor of The New Republic, will spend a day at the University on Thursday, Oct. 19, as a Poynter Fellow in Journalism.

Beinart will be the guest at a 3:30 p.m. master's tea at Pierson College, 261 Park St. The event is free and open to the public. Earlier in the day, he will appear at an English class taught by Barbara Stuart.

The Poynter program brings distinguished journalists to the campus for a day or two of interaction with students, faculty and Yale officials in a variety of formats, such as master's teas, classes and public speeches. The program both provides a rich educational experience for students and ensures that the Poynter Fellows leave Yale with a deeper appreciation of its people and resources.

Beinart graduated from Yale College in 1993 with distinction in history and political science, winning the Alpheus Henry Snow Prize for leadership and academic excellence. During his senior year, he won both Rhodes and Marshall scholarships for graduate study at Oxford University.

Beinart spent the summer of 1993 as a New Republic reporter-researcher before beginning a master's program in international relations at Oxford's University College. While at Oxford, Beinart continued to write for The New Republic, as well as for Newsweek and London's Financial Times.

After graduating from Oxford in the summer of 1995, Beinart returned to The New Republic as managing editor. He became senior editor in June 1997 and editor in October 1999.

Beinart has written for The New Republic about the changing politics of American cities, globalization, the Christian right and the politics of Africa. He has also written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, The Atlantic Monthly and Time, where he is a regular contributor.
