Peabody Museum seeks volunteers to serve as docents
The Peabody Museum of Natural History is seeking individuals with interests in natural history to work as docents teaching the more than 35,000 school children who visit the museum throughout the academic year.
Prospective docents must have a college degree, should enjoy working with children and be available to teach classes on weekday mornings. Docents accepted into the program are expected to commit to it for a minimum of one year. Prospective docents will participate in a six-week training program where teaching techniques and natural history topics will be taught and discussed. The class meets weekly on six Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m., beginning Tuesday, Oct. 17. To participate, contact Sally Lanzi at (203) 432-3732.
Enrichment programs for volunteers will be held at regular intervals and are part of the experience for all volunteers. In addition to the enrichment program, museum volunteers receive free admission to the museum, free issues of the publication Peabody Explorer, a 10% discount in the Museum Store, and invitations to previews of major exhibitions. The cost for participating in docent training is $35. Docents will be refunded for program costs after teaching their fifth program.
