Works by Kosovo refugee on
view at Physicians Building

The Yale Physician's Building Art Place is hosting its second exhibition, featuring works by Kosovo refugee Burim Myftiu and 13 other artists, many from the Yale community.

Myftiu, who arrived in the United States with just the clothes on his back, learned the art of photography from his father, and his first photographs were black-and-white images of his family and friends in his hometown, Prizren. Later, as a professional photographer, Myftiu lived in Turkey and traveled and worked extensively in Asia, Africa and western Europe. He returned to Kosovo in 1997, working with international relief agencies. Because of the war there, he fled the country in 1999 and was admitted as a refugee in the United States.

Much of Myftiu's work was destroyed during the Serbian military campaign. Now in his work as a photographer in the United States, he strives to capture images that will promote better understanding and peace in the world.

The other featured artists in the exhibition are:

Dr. Jim Abrahams, associate professor in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and director of medical studies, who will display his pottery;

Maria Bluege, a registered nurse, who will exhibit her paintings;

Lucienne Coifman, a master weaver at Creative Arts Workshop, who will show her weavings;

Katie Henderson, manager of pathology graphics and imaging, who will show paintings, many of which have been placed in private collections;

Dr. Sung Kim, assistant professor in the Section of Vascular Surgery, Department of Surgery, who will display photographs;

Elizabeth Kovanen, an interior landscaper for Lucian's Greenhouse in Hamden, who will display her wild vine baskets;

Eleanore Miller, senior administrative assistant to Dr. Lawrence S. Cohen and special adviser to the medical school dean, who will display her quilts;

Karen Schnitzer, administrative assistant in the Section of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine, who will show photographs;

Laura Smith, systems analyst in the Department of Patient Financial Services, who will show photographs;

Dr. Wayne Southwick, professor emeritus of orthopaedics, who will display a bronze statue;

Barbara Tracy, recruitment coordinator at the Law School Career Development Office, who will display her quilts;

Richard A. White, communications coordinator for Yale Human Resource Services and editor of the monthly Yale staff newsletter working@yale.edu, who will show photographs; and

Linda Hali Zucker, materials assistant and buyer for the Yale University Art Gallery museum store, who will exhibit drawings and paintings.

The Yale Physician's Building is located at 800 Howard Ave. The public can view the works, which are on exhibit throughout the building, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

The exhibit has received support from Crystal Rock Bottled Water, A.C. Moore of Orange, Julia's Bakery, Hot Tomato's, New England Wine & Spirits, SignLite, Inc., Lucian's Greenhouse, Caffe Adulis, Yale School of Medicine Building Services and Operations, Hamden Framing Gallery, Inc., ITS-Med Media Services, Joel & Lorraine F.
