Yale singers will present excerpts of famous opera scenes over two nights
Yale Opera will open its season with two evenings of excerpts from various operas from the past three centuries.
The production, titled "Yale Opera Presents Opera Scenes," will take place over two nights, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3 and 4, in Morse Recital Hall of Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St.
Each night there will be a different program. The first will feature selections from Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," Britten's "Peter Grimes," Richard Strauss' "Arabella" and Puccini's "Il Tabarro." Saturday's program will include highlights from Mozart's "Don Giovanni" and "La Clemenza di Tito," Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" and Gounod's "Faust."
The roles will be sung by young artists from the School of Music's Opera Program, accompanied by piano. The stage director for the performances is Andreas Prohaskas, whose work throughout his native Germany and Austria brought him to the attention of Doris Yarick-Cross, Yale Opera's artistic director.
Tickets are $5, $3 for students. For information, call (203) 432-4158 or visit the School of Music's website at www.yale.edu/schmus.
Yale's Opera Program is considered one of the most successful programs of its kind in the nation, with many of its graduates going on to assume leading roles in major opera houses and festivals around the globe. The program emphasizes the practical study of the opera performance and encompasses thorough music training including languages, style, acting body movement and general stage skills.
