With his 1,712 career receiving yards, senior Eric Johnson set a new school record during Yale's game against the University of Pennsylvania on Oct. 21. Johnson had 13 receptions and scored two touchdowns at the game.

Sophomore Laura O'Neill (Milton, MA) was named the ECAC Runner of the Week on Oct. 17. She was the individual winner at the New England Championships on
Oct. 13, completing the 5.017-kilometer course in 17:35.

The Bulldogs, ranked 15th in the latest national poll, hope to improve on last year's seventh-place finish at the Heptagonal Championships.


Field Hockey (3-11, 2-4 Ivy)

This Week: Oct. 28 vs. Virginia (at Duke), 2 p.m.

Oct. 29 at Duke, 2 p.m.

The Bulldogs have won three of their last four games.

Senior Christine Anthony (Oklahoma City, OK) scored the game-winning goal with 9:54 left in overtime in the victory over Pennsylvania.

Freshman Stephanie Dolmat-Connell (Princeton, MA) had the first three goals of her career last week. She scored once against Quinnipiac and added two goals in the win over Penn. For her efforts she was selected as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week.


Football (5-1, 2-1 Ivy)

This Week: Oct. 28 vs. Columbia, 1 p.m., Yale Bowl

Yale is in a five-way tie for first place in the Ivy League. Cornell, Harvard, Pennsylvania and Princeton are also 2-1.

Senior Eric Johnson (Needham, MA) had 13 receptions for 172 yards and two touchdowns against Pennsylvania. He now has 1,712 career receiving yards, which is a new school record.

Yale's defense had a season-high five sacks, including two by sophomore Nick Shoumatoff (Keene, NY).

The crowd of 35,050 at Yale Bowl was the most for a non-Harvard or non-Princeton game since Navy drew 38,000 to the Bowl in 1981.

Sophomore Jay Alberts (Sunset Hills, MO) had two goals and one assist in the victory over Pennsylvania. He leads the team in overall scoring with 13 points (five goals, three assists).

Freshman Justin Burton (Somerset, NJ) had the first multi-point game of his career. He scored one goal and added two assists. For his efforts he was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week.

Yale now has four shutouts on the season.


Women's Soccer (8-6-1, 2-3-0 Ivy)

Oct. 21-Yale 4, Pennsylvania 2

This Week: Oct. 27 vs. Columbia, 7 p.m., Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium

Sophomore Chandra King (Mission Viejo, CA) scored once and added two assists in the victory over Pennsylvania. She leads the team in overall scoring with 25 points, which ties for the fifth most in a season in school history.

Rudy Meredith, in his sixth year, became the winningest coach in school history when the Bulldogs beat Connecticut on Oct. 11. He now has 62 victories at Yale, which breaks the mark of 60 that Felice Duffy compiled from 1985 to 1994.

Yale is ranked ninth in New England in the latest NSCAA poll.

Senior Greg Royce (Rye, NY) lost to eventual champion Mark Rindell of Harvard 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals of the Big Green Invitational at Dartmouth on

Freshmen Margaret Purcell (Lake Forest, IL) and Betsy Shapiro (South Orange, NJ) both won three-set matches in the Bulldogs' victory over Boston University.


Volleyball (13-6, 2-3 Ivy)

The Bulldogs rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Manhattan, winning the decisive fifth game 15-10. Junior Carissa Abbott (Encino, CA) paced the Bulldogs with 17 kills.

Against Brown, senior Stephanie McMahon (Manhattan Beach, CA) had 17 kills and only three errors.


Other Notes

Yale's lightweight eight finished first at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Oct. 22. The lightweight four was the top college finisher and placed fifth.

In women's crew, Yale's freshman eight finished third at the Head of the Charles.
