A dedication ceremony for the Gilder Boathouse on the Housatonic River in Derby was held Oct. 20.
The new boathouse for Yale's crew teams was largely made possible by the generosity of Richard Gilder '54, and his daughter Ginny '79, who donated $4 million for the project and invited alumni and friends to match their gift.
The Gilder Boathouse, designed by Turner Brooks Architects of New Haven, provides storage space for shells and boats, office and meeting spaces, and greatly needed shower and locker room facilities. The expansive structure also serves as a prime vantage point from which to view the finish line of the 2,000-meter race course.
President Richard C. Levin and Athletic Director Thomas Beckett attended the dedication ceremony with the Gilders.
The new boathouse, which replaced the University's 75-year-old Bob Cook Boat House, is also home to a summer Community Rowing Program that was started and endowed as part of the fundraising effort. The creation of a rowing program for area youth was championed by Ginny Gilder, who rowed for four years at Yale and competed on two Olympic teams, winning a silver medal. Yale's crew tradition dates to 1843, when the first college boat club in the United States was founded.
